The Coastal Garden

Planting Design in West Cork

This garden is located in a stunning coastal location and the remit was to create a striking planting design that is both naturalistic and tolerant of the exposed seaside conditions.

Importance of Context

In consideration of the coastal and rural setting, the objective of the planting scheme is to harmonise with its natural environment. This involves the strategic use of native plants to enhance the local ecosystem. Out of the 28 species incorporated in the planting plan, a remarkable 10 species are native or cultivars of native plants. This approach not only promotes biodiversity but also ensures that the landscaping is in tune with the indigenous flora, supporting local wildlife and creating a sustainable habitat.

Naturalistic Planting Design

The naturalistic planting design embraces an effortless informal style characterized by drifts of ornamental grasses and perennials. This aesthetic enhances the beauty of outdoor spaces while promoting biodiversity. The careful arrangement of these plants creates a serene and inviting atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for gardens aiming for a harmonious connection with nature.

Key Components of the Planting Design

  • Ornamental Grasses: These versatile plants add texture and movement, enhancing the overall lightness of the design.

  • Perennials: Selected for their seasonal interest, perennials provide a continuous display of color and life throughout the year.
  • Shrubs and Trees: Incorporating shrubs and trees serves as "anchors," providing year round structure.
